Cleckheaton finish season with 10 try demolition

Cleckheaton travelled to sun drenched Durham today to complete their season and came away with a spectacular victory.
Richard Piper missed the game through injury, Brad Marsden moved to the No.8 position, Dom Flanagan returned on the wing with Jack Marshall at full back, Robin Bennett was starting blind side flanker with James Wilson, Ryan Piercy and Tom Breakwell providing plenty of experience on the bench. Ben Thrower was making his 200th appearance for Cleckheaton.
It was very even in the first quarter , Thiu Barnard emerged with the ball on 20 minutes to open the scoring with his 3rd try of the season 0-5.
The hosts applied some pressure and scored a similar try after some good close quarter mauling on 28 minutes, conversion was good 7-5. The Durham scrum was going backwards at an alarming rate and Cleckheaton started to dominate. On 30 minutes , Cleckheaton swept down the right flank, good work from Breakwell and Brambani put Dom Flanagan into space and he put an inside pass to Jack Marshall who crossed for his 19th try of the season, Breakwell adding the goal 7-12. On 39 minutes a smart grubber kick through saw Marshall win the race for the touchdown, Breakwell goaled 7-19. A minute later, the bonus point was secured with Mike Hayward crossing for his 20th try of the season, again goaled by Breakwell making the score 7-26 at half time. Ryan Piercy replaced Thiu Barnard and James Wilson replaced Robin Bennett which saw Dom Flanaghan go to flanker, Wilson to full back and Marshall to the right wing.
Into the second half and with Cleckheaton's pack dominating, after a scrum Josh Plunkett picked up at the base to touchdown for his 6th try of the season, Breakwell adding the goal 7-33 on 48 minutes. Jack Marshall then completed his hat after a quick tap penalty and a kick pass by Breakwell caught the defence napping. Breakwell added another goal 7-40 after 55 minutes.2 minutes later Archie Rika Rayne charged over the try line after approach work by Joe Flanaghan and Brambani. Another goal from Breakwell and the score was 7-47. Tom Breakwell replaced Ollie Depledge at scrum half.
Durham were working hard to stem the flow and they made a rare incursion into the Cleckheaton half which resulted in a try although there appeared to be a forward pass in the build up, conversion was good 14-47 on 66 minutes. Tom Hainsworth was next on the scoreboard with a typical example of direct running that blasted through the tiring defence for his 19th try of the season, Breakwell adding the goal 14-54.A minute later and Brambani got a try , his 7th of the season again goaled by Breakwell, 14-61. On 75
minutes Durham crossed for their 3rd try of the game in the corner, goal kick was good 21-61. On the stroke of time Jack Marshall got his 21st try of the season after a comedy of errors resulting from a kick out of defence by Brambani which after 2 or 3 attempts to pick up by Durham was hacked on by Marshall who eventually grabbed the ball and strolled over for his 4th try of the match. Breakwell added his 9th conversion from 10 attempts to complete the scoring, final score Durham 21 Cleckheaton 68.
An excellent season for Cleckheaton after a sticky start saw them win 19 matches whilst losing just 7.
With Driffield losing at Scarborough and Pocklington and Heath battling to a 31-31 draw, Cleckheaton ended the season on 95 points and 4th place in a competitive league, with a league restructuring taking place , its uncertain which league Cleckheaton will play in next season .
