Cleckheaton prevail in 11 try thriller

Cleckheaton travelled to Scarborough looking to consolidate their 3rd place in the league as the season reaches its climax.
Cleckheaton had several players out with injuries after last week's game, Archie Rika-Rayne (shoulder) and Will Denham (knee) both missed out , Robin Bennett started at hooker with Ollie Clark on the bench with James Wilson and Matt Piper. Richard Piper resumed at No.8 after his ankle injury.
Scarborough kicked off and were first on the scoreboard when a kick out of defence was charged down and the bounce favoured Euan Govier who touched down for an unconverted try 5-0 after 2 minutes. On 14 minutes , Scarborough were penalised and Breakwell found touch 5 metres out, Marsden took clean ball at the line out and was driven over the line for his 3rd try of the season, kick was wide 5-5.
4 minutes later, Scarborough were back in front after Cleckheaton fell asleep following a 50-22 kick out of defence, a quick line out was taken and the Scarborough second row Rennard went over unopposed, conversion was good 12-5.
Cleckheaton got the next try after Dom Flanagan made a powerful run from midfield towards the left touchline but popped a perfect offload to Jack Marshall who scooted away to score his 16th try of the season, 12-10 on 22 minutes.
The tries kept on coming, on 28 minutes Scarborough extended their lead with a try by Ratcliffe following a maul close to the tryline, the conversion hit the post and Scarborough led 17-10. Ben Thrower got a yellow card after Cleckheaton won a penalty which was reversed after he engaged in a bout of handbags with a Scarborough forward who was also dispatched at the same time. So, 14 a side for 10 minutes either side of half time, could either side find a score? Of course, this time it was the Scarborough left wing who failed to deal with a kick through, Hainsworth toe poked the ball over the try line and won the race for the touchdown, Breakwell added the conversion to tie the game up at 17 each, it had been a breathless first half with plenty of errors and an even score line just about summed up the first half.
The second half started in a similar way to the first except it was a Cleckheaton score, Dale Breakwell prolific point scorer with his goal kicking forced his way over the line for his 1st try of the season, he missed the conversion but Cleckheaton had the lead for the first time at 17-22 . 3 minutes later left wing Mikey Hayward strolled over the line after the ball was spread wide to the left with Jack Marshall creating the overlap, conversion was off the mark again but Cleckheaton now had a 10 point lead at 17-27.
Scarborough now had the best spell of the game they drove the ball well in the pack but were met by solid tackling , continual prompting by the number 10 caused the visitors problems and with ruck ball being won , Cleckheaton were under pressure, they eventually cracked when Boyes dived over on 52 minutes, conversion was good and it was 24-27. For the next 10 minutes Scarborough chucked the kitchen sink and everything else into an effort to get back ahead. Cleckheaton didn't buckle this time and on 63 minutes Tom Hainsworth who has been in a rich vein of form got his 2nd try with a storming run down the left , his 12th in his last 7 games and 18th for the season, Dom Brambani added the goal 24-34 on 64 minutes.
Scarborough were not done yet, they pounded the Cleckheaton line and were met with a magnificent defensive effort. Matt Piper and James Wilson came into the game to replace Breakwell and Richard Piper but on 78 minutes the resistance was broken with the 5th Scarborough try of the afternoon down the left wing from Marshall , conversion was good and at 31-34 it was looking to be a nail biting last couple of minutes. Cleckheaton didn't help their cause with Matt Piper being shown the Yellow Card for an offence at the ruck and he was followed by Dom Flanagan for a deliberate knock on, so Cleckheaton had to endure 8 minutes of stoppage time with only 13 players on the field. The final whistle blew and Cleckheaton had 5 league points in the bag, retaining their 3rd place in the league.
This was a very hard earned win, they needed to pick themselves up after last week's reverse and they did just that. The final try scored today was Cleckheaton's 100th try of the campaign, an average of more than 4 tries per game. Next week, the final home game of the season against Malton and Norton, kick off at 3.00 pm.
