Cleckheaton blow away Maroons with clinical second half display

Cleckheaton made the short trip to Morley looking to continue their excellent run of form.
In team news , Tom Breakwell resumed at scrum half and James Wilson started at full back with Jack Marshall in his preferred right wing position. Niall Jackson, Dom Flanagan and Ryan Piercy occupied the bench. Morley kicked off on a bright and breezy afternoon and for the first 10 minutes the game was mainly played in the middle of the field with very few scoring opportunities. On 13 minutes , Cleckheaton were moving the ball to the right when a floated pass was intercepted by the Morley centre who ran 50 metres to score under the posts with a simple conversion giving the hosts a 7-0 lead. On 20 minutes Tom Breakwell was sent to the bin after a difference of opinion with Referee Sam Potts. Morley couldn't take advantage of the extra man and after a long range touch finder from Dale Breakwell, Cleckheaton stole the line out and drove to the line, Morley conceded a penalty and from the resultant scrum Thiu Barnard got over the line for his 2nd try of the season , conversion was wide 7-5. Cleckheaton were starting to apply pressure but couldn't add to the scoring. On 35 minutes, Morley conceded a penalty just inside the visitors half and Dale Breakwell thumped a 53 metre goal which scraped over the crossbar 7-8. On the next attack, Cleckheaton recycled the ball in midfield and Dale Breakwell dropped a 30 metre goal to extend the lead to 7-11. Jack Marshall was sent to the sin bin on 36 minutes for a high tackle after chasing a high kick downfield. Dale Breakwell had a chance to stretch the lead further with the final kick of the half but this kick sailed wide of the target 7-11 at half time.
After a very tight opening session , the general feeling was that the game was finely balanced, Cleckheaton nudged to scoreboard into life with a fine move down the Stand side and Jack Marshall took the final pass to score 5 metres in from touch for his 14th try of the season. Dale Breakwell added the goal 7-18 on 50 minutes. Niall Jackson replaced Will Denham, Dom Flanagan came on for James Wilson and Ryan Piercy replaced Thiu Barnard
Cleckheaton were now slipping into high gear and Mike Hayward crossed in the left hand corner for his 17th try of the season, Breakwell again added the goal 7-25. Almost from the restart, Cleckheaton attacked down the left and Hayward got his second try of the game, conversion was missed 7-30. Dale Breakwell left the game and was replaced by James Wilson. The next score came on 64 minutes when Tom Hainsworth took a pass on his own 10 metre line and powered past a string of defenders to score under the posts, Tom Breakwell added the goal 7-37. On 68 minutes, it was the forwards turn to shine, after multiple phases down the left, Josh Plunkett got over the line for his 5th try of the season, 7-42.
On 71 minutes , Tom Hainsworth went on a charge up the field breaking through tackles , he had Hayward on his shoulder but sold a dummy to the defence and scored a solo try under the posts, Tom Breakwell added the goal 7-49. Morley then had one of their best spells of the game but some top defence kept the Maroons at bay. On 79 minutes, Ryan Piercy got over the line for his first try of the season , although there was clearly a knock on by a Cleckheaton player in the build up that was unseen by the referee, conversion went wide 7-54.
There was just enough time for a restart, but when the ball next went out of play , the Referee brought the game to an end.
This was a hugely impressive performance, especially 43 points without reply in the second half.
Next week, Cleckheaton travel to Heath for a game rearranged from 19th February kick of at 3:00pm.
