The Kestrels maintain their 100% away record

The Kestrels retained their 100% away record this season with hard fought win over Hemsworth 1st XV.  With regular scrum-half Mark Fletcher unavailable, Craig Blackburn volunteered to step in at number 9 and the Kestrels were also joined by 1st team regular, Grant Turton in the second row.
Hemsworth attacked Cleckheaton with vigour from the outset, pressurising the opening scrums and only stout last minute defence prevented an early try for the homeside.  Cleckheaton composed themselves after this early barrage and got on the score sheet first when it was Cleck’s turn to push their opponents in the scrum.  With the ball just a foot from the line and with No 8, Neil Gillan, about to gather and touchdown, Hemsworth’s stand-off ran in, picked up the ball and booted it down field. A penalty try duly followed, which was easily converted from in front of the sticks by Toulson.
Hemsworth hit back almost immediately, when the Kestrels found themselves stretched on their left flank and the homeside used their numerical advantage to go in for a try close to the posts.  The conversion was missed and Cleck retained a 7 – 5 lead.
Gareth Lamb improved the advantage on 30 minutes, splitting the defending line with an angled run and then wrong footing the fullback with a stop-start step. Toulson, ever reliable with the boot, added the extras.  Once again Cleck let Hemsworth straight back in for another try and conversion and at the half time break the Kestrels’ lead was reduced to14-12.

Cleckheaton went close 10 minutes into the 2nd half when replacement Ben Thrower was adjudged to be held up and then had a number of 5 metre scrums but were unable to score.  Hemsworth went ahead following a cross-field kick that bounced perfectly for their chasing winger and with 15 minutes left, the Kestrels found themselves 17-14 down.
The Kestrels strengthened their resolve and were soon gaining territory into Hensworth’s danger zone. A well worked line-out move saw Danny Graham feed Gillan on the blindside and he drew the last defender before passing to Ben thrower for a score in the corner. Toulson converted from wide out and then added a further penalty with 2 minutes to go give a final score of 24-17.
Another determined performance from the Kestrels, well done to all concerned.
