Kestrels maintain unbeaten run with victory in local derby

Kestrels ground out a bonus point victory at Moorend today against local rivals Brodlieans. On a crisp afternoon with very little breeze, the opening exchanges were played in midfield with both teams battling to get the upper hand. Ben Etchells and Steve Noble made some telling runs , while Danny Archer got the backs moving with some good work at the base of the scrum. Brodlieans kicked out of defence but struggled to find touch and this led to the first try of the game on 15 minutes when Josh Clough was in support and took a short pass to crash over from close range, Sam Womersley added the goal , 7-0.
On 24 minutes , Brodlieans were reduced to 14 men after not retiring 10 metres the Yellow Card was shown and before the merry whistle blower had put the card in his pocket there was some backchat and Brodlieans were down to 13 for 10 minutes. Kestrels took full advantage, Danny Archer darting over from the scrum and Womersley adding the goal for a 14-0 lead.
Brodlieans had their best spell of the game when short of personnel, driving into Kestrels 22 where a penalty was awarded and converted on 37 minutes to take the score to 14-3. It didn't stay like that for long as on the stroke of half time second row Sam Cheney stretched over the line with Womersley again converting the score now 21-3 at half time.
On 42 minutes , Womersley was held 5 metres from the line but he managed to find Eliott Whetham who crossed for the bonus point try , 26-3.
That concluded Kestrels scoring for the afternoon, although Harry Sutcliffe made a great break and was caught on the 22 and a supporting player went off his feet and the chance was lost.
Brodlieans scored 2 unconverted tries in the final quarter to make the score a little more respectable at 26-13 but Kestrels extended their record to 9 wins and 2 draws without defeat this season.
