On Sunday our U16's Girls faced Selby for the second year running in the Yorkshire Cup Final.
Having lost out in the dying seconds last year, the team were more determined than ever to claim the silverware.
With temperatures rising and the desire to follow on from the success of our U14's that morning, the nerves were beginning to take hold. Officials decided the game would be played in thirds to allow several water breaks, and as history repeated itself, Cleck spent the first 20 minutes defending.
The need for fresh legs and rollings subs became evident, but more to our gain, as the girls could take a breather and come back on for one strong burst after another. The tide began to turn as Cleck drew the defenders in down the middle and the backs could move the ball around to score some well worked tries.
With just 90 seconds to go, Cleck were leading by one try and were awarded a penalty right in front of the posts... with screams from the crowd to go for the sticks, they chose to run it....sadly the ball was fumbled but they'd done enough, phew. The final whistle blew and the scoreline sat at 20, 15 to Cleckheaton.
A tough game that could have gone either way, with a fabulous standard of rugby on display to a large crowd from across Yorkshire.
The jubilation and pride for all involved will be a memory that will last a lifetime. Quite simply, Cleckheaton U16's Girls are THE best in Yorkshire!!
Now onto a good stab at the National Cup next season.....another first for the club. These girls make us proud as punch!
