Fourteen Man Cleckheaton Put In Spirited Performance

Cleckheaton put in a battling performance away to promotion hopefuls Hull despite conceding five tries in the end. A valiant effort by the team took them very close to producing an upset but indiscipline ultimately proved costly and left the club with no points to show for their hard work.

Hull started with an intimidatory air but any thoughts that their superior sized pack would give them a psychological advantage were soon dispelled as Cleckheaton first tore into them in defence and then took the game to them in the forwards. After the first quarter of the game, with the scoreboard yet to be troubled, Cleckheaton were dealt a blow and had cause for concern as the game was stopped to attend to winger Gareth Lamb who had what appeared to be a serious spinal injury. The player was taken to hospital by ambulance but thankfully was discharged later that evening with no serious long-term issues. The game restarted after a 25 minute break with Mark Barlow replacing Lamb and making his debut for the club and it was the visitors that hit their straps the quickest. Strong forward drives by Cleckheaton with Rich Piper to the fore and Luke Pearson making inroads, placed severe pressure on Hull's defence and their line was under serious threat. However the pressure evaporated and Cleckheaton's chances were dealt a severe blow when Paul Turner was red-carded following a clash with Hull's second row, Dario Jurcevic, who was also shown a card but in his case yellow. Despite being down to 14 men Cleckheaton continued to work their socks off and were rewarded on the half hour mark when winger Martin Woodhead crossed in the corner for an unconverted try. On the stroke of half time Josh Hall put his side 8-0 ahead with the addition of a penalty goal.

With the advantage of an extra man, Hull started the second half strongly and within the first 5 minutes full-back Lee Birch finished off a nice handling move for a try in the corner. Hull continued to press but Cleckheaton’s defence proved excellent keeping the home side from crossing. Unfortunately as Cleck scrambled for possession a couple of penalties were conceded and the referee’s patience wore thin, the next technical offence was deemed to have been committed by the Moorenders’ hooker, Joey Carley and he was sent to the bin for ten minutes leaving Cleck down to just thirteen. Minutes later as the visitors continued to thwart Hull's superior numbers, the referee awarded a penalty try which was converted by Josh Bragman to give Hull a 12 -8 lead.

Cleckheaton were still within touching distance and following more pressure on their opponents, Josh Hall, who had shown his class throughout, added a penalty goal to leave one point in it. Hull extended the lead back to six again with quarter of an hour remaining, when Robinson went in for an unconverted try. Cleckheaton were not going to lie down however and following a line out close to Hull's whitewash, the forwards showed they could match their East Yorkshire opponents and Rich Piper peeled away from the back of a maul for a try to bring the scores to a tantalising 17-16. An upset looked possible but two late tries for Hull, the latter of which came from the good fortune of a freak bounce, slanted the score line in the home side's favour.

This game showed that Cleckheaton have the heart to take on any team in this league and if they can cut out the penalties, whilst continuing to display the level of commitment in evidence at Hull, then it will not be long before the victories start flowing.
