Kestrels open season with a home win 36-12

The Kestrels open the season with a 36-12 win against Harrogate

Rugby returned to moorend on Saturday with the Kestrels hosting Harrogate.

The game started in torrential rain and both sides defences were on top for the 1st 20 minutes with both sides defending well. After 20 mins jarred Toulson opened the scoring with a well struck penalty 40 metres out.

Harrogate responded well and took advantage of the naivety in the Kestrels back line when they got the numbers wrong in midfield which resulted in a 4 against 2 situation with Harrogate taking the lead with a converted score.

Cleckheaton soon hit back due to the forward dominance in the scrum when a pushover try from 10 metres out saw Robin Bennett touchdown. Sam Wood added the extras from out wide.

The next score again came from the forwards when a Lin out 10 metres out was caught by Matt Deighton which set up a rolling maul with Jack Seddon scoring in the corner.

The 2nd half started with Cleckheaton again pressing but a loose ball inside the visitors 22 was picked up by their speedy winger who went the length of the field to score.

Cleck again hit back when after a succession of forward drives Toulson played a clever inside ball to James Crowther who went in under the posts. Toulson added the extras.

20 mins in to the half the game had to go to passive scrummaging due to in jury's to the visitors. This looked likely to be of help to Harrogate as the Cleck front row of Chris Piper and young Niall Jackson were dominant.
From a scrum 20 metres out a quick pass from the base saw number 9 Lewis Beasty show good awareness by putting Jake Jagger one on one with the gate winger to go over the whitewash. Toulson converted from the touch line.

The try of the game came next when Piper made ground into the gate 22 he found Matthew Hadfields racing up in support with the full back closing him down the popular prop threw an outrageous dummy and shimmied round him to finish the scoring for the day and send the crowd and his team mates in to raptures.
Toulson again converting.

A good start to the season with a disjointed back line a special mention must go to 2 of last years colts Bradley Marsden and Luke Pearson who played in the back line even though they are both forwards.
